Chapter 7

The loud clanking noise reverberated like a heavy pipe banging against metal. Every cell in her body winced and her head throbbed as if it was a ticking time bomb ready to explode. Raine moaned in response and curled up in a fetal position with her knees drawn in close to her chest.

Moving even a little brought about a feeling like she was swaying on a boat during a storm with the waves tossing the watercraft all over the place. She held still, but the swirling motion in her head remained, making her stomach respond with a violent protest of nausea.

Dim orange colors swam before her eyes. It was either sunshine, or there was a light on somewhere.

“Make it stop,” she rasped in protest of the continued banging sounds that echoed through her mind like a train whistle going through a tunnel. “Please.”

The noise stopped for a brief second, then resumed. Had she been heard, or had she only imagined whispering her thoughts out loud? She couldn’t produce any other words. The sound of her own voice droned painfully through her brain.

Despite the dizziness, Raine uncurled herself and rolled slowly to her back. This position made the dizziness ten times worse, so she rolled onto her other hip. The light filtering through her closed eyelids became brighter. Should she dare try to open her eyes?

With her right eye remaining closed, she slowly raised the lid of her left eye. Although her surroundings seemed to be dimmed, natural light drifted in from somewhere in the space. It was probably a window.

Fuzzy images started to materialize through her hazy vision. She was in a small room of sorts. She was definitely lying on a bed, but this was certainly not a bedroom. The narrow room was barely wide enough for two people to pass each other. Along one side came the source of the incessant noise that continued to beat like native war drums inside her head.

The familiar profile of a man stood facing a small stove along one wall of the confining space. Raine forced both her eyes open. She blinked to sharpen her focus. Jerry? What was he doing here? Or better yet, where was she and what was she doing here . . . wherever ‘here’ was?

At the sound of her irrepressible soft moan, Jerry’s head turned in her direction. A moment passed, then he smiled and faced her fully.

“Back in the land of the living, I see.” He set the coffee pot he’d been holding on the counter and took a couple of steps toward her.

Only now did it finally dawn on her where she was. This was Jerry’s trailer. Her eyes widened and she raised her head. The action immediately elicited a dagger-like pain in her skull. She flinched and hissed through clenched teeth.

“Easy. I suspect you’re not gonna want to sit up so fast just yet.”

Jerry was right beside her, trying to steady her as she raised up on one arm.

“What am I doing here?” she rasped, holding her other hand against her throbbing temple.
